PNoy wants 'person of foresight' as successor
MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III laid out the qualities that he hopes his successor would have.
He is hoping that his successor would be a "person of foresight" and would continue his campaign to promote transparency and accountability in government.
In his speech before the delegates of the 2nd Integrity Summit, Aquino said his style is to "pick up the can rather than kick [it] down the road" and try to solve the problem rather than pass it on to someone else.
"I am faced with a choice: I can just kick the can down the road, and let the next set of leaders deal with this problem. After all, the politically prudent thing to do would be to not rattle the cage, to not make any noise about something that is, at the moment, not yet an issue,” he said.
He said his mindset is not typical of politicians. Instead of passing on the problem to someone else, he would rather solve it himself.
“So that is why my administration is studying creative solutions to all of these challenges, and hopefully we can find a way to make these problems gone in the shortest possible time without burdening our taxpayers unreasonably," he said.
Aquino said he hopes that his successor will add to the culture of integrity the current administration is building now.
The summit was organized by the Integrity Initiative, a private sector-led campaign "to promote common ethical standards among various sectors in society."
The President attributed recent economic gains to his platform of government, including promoting transparency and ensuring business in a level-playing field.
