14 mayors snub NBI summons on Malampaya scam
MANILA - Fourteen mayors have yet to appear or just even send word to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after they were sent subpoenas last month in connection with the so-called Malampaya fund scam.
They were among 97 mayors who reportedly received money from the Malampaya fund.
The Commission on Audit (COA) sent letters to the same 97 mayors last year.
The COA letters inquired if the mayors received farm implements amounting to P10 million.
The project was requested through the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), using the Malampaya fund.
According to the whistleblowers, there were no deliveries made. The projects were coursed through the fake nongovernment organizations allegedly formed by businesswoman Janet Napoles.
NBI Assistant Director Medardo de Lemos said they will file the charges against those implicated in the Malampaya fund scam on Monday.
The 14 mayors will be given time to explain, but this will not prevent the NBI in submitting its report and filing charges with the Ombudsman.
De Lemos said only the mayors can verify if they did get the funds from DAR.
