El Shaddai's Bro. Mike on presidency: 'It's my boyhood dream'

People close to El Shaddai leader Brother Mike Velarde disclosed that so many have long tried to persuade the Catholic charistmatic group leader to run for president of the Philippines.

But to date, Velarde has not confirmed nor denied his intentions for the 2010 presidential elections.

“Masama ba? Masama ba tayong tumakbo?... It's my boyhood dream, Hanggang panaginip na lang yan,” he said.

However, if he's provoked and angered, then he may just be compelled to seek the high post.

“Kung di na tama ang direksyon ng takbo ng mga nasa gobyerno," he said, adding that it is still too early to decide.

But what can really possibly prod Velarde to run for president is if the Reproductive Health Bill is passed in Congress.

The Catholic Church vehemently opposes the proposed bill. Velarde said there is a provision which allows teaching sexual education to the youth and the use of taxes to purchase contraceptives to be distributed to the people.

Velarde also admitted he talked to House Speaker Prospero Nograles and President Arroyo about the issue, and told them his stand on the bill.

He believes the President will keep her word in favoring the position taken by the Church.

“I believe the President will stand on her position," he said. "Our position is, na yung contraceptive bill, wag i-insist sa taumbayan."

Meantime, reports of Velarde possibly casting his lot in the presidency in 2010 drew mixed reactions from other possible presidential contenders.

“That would be very, very interesting. Pero gaya ng sinabi ko, sa tingin ko ay hindi siya papayagan ni Sister Belen (Velarde's wife) at hindi siya papayagan ng milyun-milyong El Shaddai,” Sen. Loren Legarda said.

Velarde said he considers all presidential hopefuls his friends, and sees no problem just in case he decides to take a shot at the presidency.

“Pag ayaw nila, hindi ako tutuloy. Pag magkasundo kami, eh di mag-bise nalang sila!,” he said.
