Youths plank vs anti-planking law
MANILA, Philippines - The Kabataan Party-list is calling on the youth to plank for a cause, including their opposition to the anti-planking bill.
In a statement, the party-list said it has launched the “PLANK! For a Cause,” which aims to "enhance the use of planking for social causes and consolidate various planking photos around the world to dramatize the militancy and creativity of the youth.”
Planking, which has become a trend in several parts of the world, is the practice of lying face down with arms to the side. The person, photographed in a public place, mimics a flat wood.
This was used as a protest by the youth during a transport strike on Monday.
The following day, Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo initiated an anti-planking bill that bans planking as a form of protest. He said the protest debilitated traffic, to the detriment of the riding public.
"The anti-planking bill is not only against planking as a protest form, it even aims to restrict our students from staging protest actions on the whole. This definitely goes against the youth's fundamental right to freedom of expression," Kabataan Party-list Rep. Raymond Palatino said.
The party-list group put up an online site where the plankers can post their photos and specify the cause they are fighting for.
Several plankers did so on Wednesday in various parts of the Batasang Pambansa complex.
