Binay calls COA Mendoza an 'attack dog'
MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay called Commission on Audit (COA) Commissioner Heidi Mendoza an “attack dog” amid another one of her allegations, this time directed towards former Makati Mayor Elenita Binay.
At the sidelines of the Liga ng Barangay national convention, Binay told reporters: “Malungkot nga lamang, pinakikita lang talaga na hindi ho kami mali na si Mrs. Mendoza ay attack dog ho laban sa amin.”
He said Mendoza has long been gathering evidence against the Binays’ projects in Makati. “Ito yung sinasabi ko nga naggagather ng evidence, galit na galit sa amin sa Makati. Basta’t yan na si Mrs. Heidi Mendoza.”
Mendoza testified anew before the Sandiganbayan on Wednesday on graft charges filed against Dr. Binay, the Vice President’s wife.
Mrs. Binay is accused of approving allegedly anomalous contracts worth about P72 million to purchase office furniture for the Makati City Hall in 2000 and 2001.
In earlier reports, Binay branded as "politically motivated" the on-going audit of all projects during his term as Makati Mayor. He said the audit was at the behest of Mendoza.
On the allegations against Mrs. Binay, the Vice President said: “Alam mo, matagal na yang kasong yan. Hindi naman bago yun. Lumalabas naman sa diyaryo ang kasong yun, pero ito ang kauna-unahang kaso at sang-ayon sa aming narinig, bitbit-bitbit ito ni Mrs. Heidi Mendoza.”
Binay is referring to the Sandiganbayan 2nd division’s decision in April 2011 that the special audit that Mendoza did was insufficient to pin down Mrs. Binay. The anti-graft court also noted that the prosecution presented “shoddy” evidence.
He also twitted Mendoza’s style of bringing with her the media for mileage purposes.
“Talaga namang pustura ni Mrs. Mendoza, ha. Bitbit-bitbit niya yung media and I think she was able to attain the attention of media, so nung lumabas yung direct examination niya, it is as if yun na yung evidence,” Binay said.
“Direct examination pa lang yun. Wala pang cross examination dun. Pero dadating din naman yung cross examination,” he added.
Mrs. Binay’s lawyer said yesterday they are prepared to cross-examine Mendoza. The lawyer also expressed confidence the Sandiganbayan will once again rule in their favor.
