UNA: Admin trying to neutralize Estradas, opposition
MANILA -- United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) secretary general Toby Tiangco said the administration is intent on publicly embarrassing the Estrada family and then subsequently neutralizing the opposition.
"Hindi pa nga nagsisimula ang imbestigasyon sa sinasabing [statement of assets, liabilities and net worth], kaya't wala pang napapatunayang mali dito. Paano naman ito magiging basehan ng isa pang imbestigasyon ng BIR? Maliwanag na panggigipit ito at pagiging benggatibo,” he said in a statement.
This came after the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) announced it would investigate Senator Jinggoy Estrada’s acquisition of a property at the Wack Wack subdivision in Mandaluyong City.
Estrada earlier admitted that the mansion, which reportedly costs P120 million, was not on his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
Tiangco believes this came about after Estrada announced last week in his privilege speech the alleged faults of the administration, including the P50-million incentive given to each senator who voted to oust Chief Justice Renato Corona.
"Nakakapagtataka lang kasi that this government seems to manifest an unusually high interest in ganging up on the Estradas. There seems to be a bold campaign to politically persecute political enemies in an apparent bid to cripple the opposition," he said.
Tiangco also cited the disqualification of Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito allegedly due to campaign overspending.
He believes this is just a “token strike” that serves as a message that more will come.
"Malaki ang posibilidad that this kind of systematic political repression is sanctioned by the administration. This is a 'political exhibition' to deflect the gamut of corruption among administration allies at the expense of one family," Tiangco said.
He also noted the disqualification case against Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada. Senator JV Ejercito, meanwhile, also revealed a foiled attempt to exclude him from the 12th spot in the senatorial elections.
"Maliwanag ang mensahe ng Liberal Party, lahat ng magsasalita ay kayang balikan ng gobyerno. Using agencies of the government to harass the political opposition based on unproven allegations is tantamount to corruption. Ito ay kabaligtaran ng ‘Tuwid ng Daan,’" Tiangco said.
