Who is Maya Santos? Link between Benhur, senators bared
MANILA (UPDATED) - The bail hearing of Janet Lim Napoles continued today at the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150, with the prosecution presenting witness Merlina Suñas, a former employee of Napoles.
Napoles, who is accused of masterminding the pork barrel scam, is facing illegal detention charges filed by her cousin and former employee Benhur Luy.
Suñas said she was present during a meeting with Napoles, Luy, and 2 other employees at their office in Ortigas in December of 2012.
She recounted how Napoles got mad at Luy after reading a text message on his phone coming from a certain Maya Santos, who Suñas identified as the project coordinator of Senators Loren Legarda and Bongbong Marcos.
Napoles was allegedly furious that Luy was making transactions behind her back, and ordered that he be detained in one of the rooms of their Ortigas office.
The defense assailed the testimony of Suñas by first asserting that the witness was no longer an employee of JLN during the meeting in question based on documents from the Department of Labor. They also noted so-called inconsistencies between Suñas' affidavit and her testimony before the court.
Atty. Lorna Kapunan also noted the witness had no knowledge of Luy's situation between the time of the meeting and his rescue on April of this year.
Meanwhile, in an interview, Kapunan also made an appeal on behalf of her client about new restrictions on the visiting hours of Napoles. She claimed that Napoles' family finds it difficult to visit her because of the rules.
Kapunan believes this constitutes cruel and unusual punishment for someone who is not yet convicted of a crime.
The next bail hearing is set on October 7, at 2 in the afternoon.
