Miriam brings house down with new jokes
MANILA – Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago began her speech cracking jokes during the 50th anniversary of Colegio de Sta. Rosa and the celebration of World Teachers' Day.
The senator also reminded the audience about the "proper" use of English words.
"The use of the word ‘mention.’ Halimbawa, mali ito: Ang laki ng bahay nila, parang mention [mansion].
"Punctuation: Daddy, pasukan ko na next week, kailangan ko po ng punctuation. [pang-tuition].
"The use of ‘curtain’ and ‘kitchen’: Aray, huwag mo akong curtain [kurutin], masa-kitchen."
Instead of pick-up lines, Santiago translated popular English songs to Filipino.
"Hey Jude is the name of the song; translation in Tagalog: Hoy Hudas.
"Power of Love, sa Tagalog: Buntis.
"Another hit song, Three Times A Lady, ang ibig sabihin sa Tagalog: Super Bakla.
"More Than A Woman, in Tagalog: Tibo.
"Can’t Be With You Tonight, in Tagalog: Nandito Asawa Ko."
But when the senator got serious, she warned of a failed state in the event the plunder charges filed against lawmakers drag on.
"Nagnakaw na limpak na limpak na pera itong mga pulitiko sa Senado at sa House of Representatives, akala nila wala nang katapusan ang swerte nila...’Yung mga nagnanakaw sa gobyerno, gaano pa kataas ang pwesto nila, dapat makulong na, doon na sila tumanda,” she said.
Santiago said state failure can be caused by rampant corruption, predatory elites who have long manipulated power, and an absence of the rule of law.
She added the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) and Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) controversies will not go away.
But Santiago said the country can still stave off a final collapse by taking three steps.
First, the administration should allow the Supreme Court temporary restraining order (TRO) to remain in place on the release of the remaining PDAF for 2013.
Second, the proposed P2.268 trillion budget for 2014 should be reduced by removing the P25.4 billion pork barrel.
And, off budget sources of revenues like the P130 billion Malampaya fund, the motor vehicle users charge, the PAGCOR social fund, and the PCSO charity fund should be integrated in the regular budget.
Santiago also urged government not to take lightly the protests against pork barrel. She said it's high time government scrap the PDAF and just let lawmakers concentrate on crafting laws.
