Comelec to weed out nuisance candidates
MANILA, Philippines – The 5-day period for the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) for next year's midterm election was generally peaceful across the country, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Now, the filing is over and there are no extensions.
“Maliban nalang kung may mga bagong i-create na political subdivision, ‘yun ay bibigyan natin ng daan. Pero ‘yung sabihing extension para sa natapos na period, wala po,” said Comelec spokesman James Jimenez.
More than 80 senatorial hopefuls filed their COCs at the Comelec's main office in Manila.
But in the next two weeks, the poll body will weed out the so-called nuisance candidates.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Epal Movement is criticizing some candidates who it says took advantage of the filing period to campaign early.
“Sapagkat ang taong bayan ay nagmamatayag. Ayaw ng taong bayan sa epal, kaya kung ako sa inyo, ibahin niyo na ang inyong style kung hindi, hindi kayo mananalo,” said Mae Paner, also known as Juana Change. -- Report from Abner Mercado, ABS-CBN News; ANC
