BIR chief dares Napoles: Sell your properties
MANILA - Businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles can always try selling her properties. That’s if she can find a loophole, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares said.
In fact, it will be easy for the government to determine if the properties, supposedly in other people’s names, are hers, she said.
“Before the properties can be disposed, these will have to pass through the BIR because of the necessary taxes. So, this can even help in our investigation of the real owners,” Henares told dzMM.
One of the lawyers of the whistleblowers earlier said Napoles is already selling quietly her properties out of fear that this will be confiscated by the government.
Stephen Cascolan said one of those being sold is a 3,500 square meter property in Forbes Park, Makati, under the name La Roca Enterprises. It is allegedly worth P800 million.
A condominium in Ritz Carlton in Los Angeles is also supposedly being disposed off.
Napoles’ lawyer, Lorna Kapunan, was quoted as saying there is truth to the news. She said there is nothing wrong with that. She even dared the Ombudsman to freeze the assets of the others involved in the scam.
“It’s clear from the testimonies who that there is a direct link to Napoles. There are no direct link yet to the [lawmakers],” Henares said.
Anyway, Napoles’ camp can always try selling the properties by raising reasons such as the family’s need for money, she said. “Baka makalusot,” she said.
