Brillantes: People's Initiative vs pork still premature
MANILA -- Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes believes that a People's Initiative for the abolition of the pork barrel may still be premature.
His statement comes after former Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno called for a People's Initiative to abolish all forms of pork barrel, including the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) and Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).
Brillantes noted that there is already an ongoing hearing at the Supreme Court on the legality of the PDAF, and that a decision should be made first before the public moves for a People's Initiative.
"Antayin muna natin ang desisyon ng Korte Suprema. Kung na-declare ng Supreme Court na unconstitutional ang PDAF, ano ngayon ang i-aabolish natin?" Brillantes said.
However, if the SC upholds the legality of the PDAF, the people could move to abolish it, he said.
Under the law, the Comelec shall set a special registration within three weeks of the scheduled initiative and then proceed with the verification of voters from the voter's list.
The poll body is also tasked to call and supervise the conduct of the People's Initiative.
