Erap, Binay to declare tandem next week
Formal declaration on Oct 21 in Tondo
MANILA - Like Senator Francis 'Chiz' Escudero, former President Joseph Estrada has postponed the formal announcement of his presidential bid in light of the devastation caused by recent typhoons.
Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said on Tuesday his father was originally scheduled to announce his presidential bid tomorrow (Wednesday), but decided to postpone it to give way to his distribution of relief goods in central and northern Luzon.
However, the younger Estrada said the former president has decided on Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay to be his running mate.
"They were supposed to make an announcement on the 14th [of October], tomorrow, kaso because of the distribution of relief goods, yung mga nangyari sa northern Luzon, na kailangan pumunta yung daddy ko doon para magdistribute ng goods sa Nueva Ecija, sa Pangasinan, sa La Union, so napostpone," Sen. Estrada explained.
Instead, he said the declaration would be made on October 21 in Tondo, Manila where the former president was born.
Sen. Estrada said the senatorial lineup includes himself, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, and guest candidates Sen. Miriam Santiago, Makati Rep. Teodoro Locsin Jr., Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., Grace Poe-Llamanzares, Jose "Joey" de Venecia III, and "probably" Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim.
Sen. Estrada said the inclusion of former Optical Media Board (OMB) chairman Edu Manzano in the senatorial lineup is still "under negotiation."
Sen. Estrada said the Erap-Binay tandem was agreed upon “several weeks ago.” Binay was chosen over Senators Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero and Loren Legarda.
Asked why his father chose Binay, the younger Estrada said: "Si Mayor Binay also has a heart for the poor, malaki ang puso niya para sa ating mga mahihirap."
Binay catching up in surveys
As for Binay's not-so-impressive showing in surveys, Sen. Estrada said: "In fairness to Mayor Binay. he has improved in the surveys, nag double-digit na siya. Hopefully, pagdating ng campaign proper, baka tumaas pa."
Enrile, chairman emeritus of Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), said Binay has considerable clout over local government officials, a network which could deliver votes.
“Don't underestimate Jojo. Maraming Ilocano. Maraming Ibanag. Maraming mayors sa Pilipinas na makokontak niya,” Enrile stressed.
Sen. Estrada added that Binay has figured well in polls for the vice-president post.
In the Pulse Asia survey from July 28-August 10, Binay got 12 percent and placed fourth after incumbent Vice-President Noli de Castro (17 percent), Legarda (21 percent) and Escudero (24 percent).
In the earlier Pulse Asia survey conducted from May 4-17, Binay got 10 percent. This was a 4% improvement from the February poll, where he landed sixth at 6%.
“His ranking may improve after he makes his announcement,” Sen. Estrada said.
Estrada hoping for 'Erap Magic 2'
Binay, president of the United Opposition (UNO), dropped his presidential bid last September after Sen. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III declared he would run for president under the Liberal Party.
Binay then offered to broker talks between Estrada and Aquino to unify the opposition.
Estrada and Aquino held a dialogue late September, but did not reach an agreement on a common ticket.
However, Sen. Estrada said the Liberal Party and the PMP could field common candidates for the senatorial race.
Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News Cebu, Estrada confirmed that he will instead make the formal announcement of the Erap-Binay tandem on October 21.
Estrada also said he will have a complete line-up of senators, congressmen, and local candidates.
Even if there are many candidates seeking the presidency, Estrada is hoping that "Erap Magic" will work for him again as it did when he won the race in 1998.

Kailangan magkaisa ang mga Pilipino mahirap man o mayaman..kailangan i educate ng 80% na botante (mangmang) at ipaliwanag sa kanila ang epekto ng ginawa nila ng binoto nila si Estrada sa pagka presidente...puro corruption lang ang ginawa sa maikling panahon...bilyonaryo lahat sila pati ang mga anak naging bilyonaryo..habang ang taong bayan ay lalong naghirap. Vote buying is a problem pero wala tayong magagawa doon pero kung kailangan nilang ibulsa ang pera sa kanila na iyon...pero huwag nilang iboto iyong nagbigay ng pera sa kanila...iboto nila dapat ang kandidato na matalino at syang makakatulong sa pagsugpo ng corruption. Hindi alam ng 80% na botante na hindi popularity contest ang Philippine elections. Ano ba ang ginawa nilang kabutihan para sa Pilipino bago sila nagkandidato ng Presidente? Tulad ni Noynoy..ano ba ang achievement niya..namatay lang ang mother niya naisipan ng tumakbo sa pagka presidente..gustong gamitin ang pangalan ng Father at Mother at kunin ang sympathy ng Filipino. Sa panahon ng elections lahat sila mangangako na gagawa ng kabutihan sa bayan at parang mga santo...ang problema pag naging presidente na makakalimutan na nila iyon at puro pagnanakaw ang gagawin...kaya dapat iyong past accomplishments ang maging basehan, character at ang talino ng kandidato. Yes you're right that main problem in the Philippines during election is vote buying. It is just a manifestation of corruption in the Philippines. it's been becoming a culture in the Philippines so I think we should start teaching our kids thats one of the cultures of the Philippines aside from using po and opo and kissing hands is using public funds for vote buying. Tsk. Tsk. tsk. Pitty on you Philippines for having these not-so-deserving politicians serving your poor people. Pitty on us people likewise that we are being robbed without us knowing it.

Yes he did but not due to his capability of public service but because of his popularity. Filipino didn't know him as a public servant but as a lousy actor of Philippine entertainment. Maybe I wasn't born so that's why I personally had no opportunity of watching his movies however knowing him today as corrupt president during his time, I don't think I would have wanted and given a damn watching those. Anyway, you might ask my credibility and biases, I wanna tell if I may say to everyone reading this comment that i am totally not so pro-administration nor pro-opposition.My generation is the most vigilant and active watchdog of our nation. Unlike before, my age bracket has more ways of expressing ourselves. We hurt and we shout because we feel the gravity of commodities price hike against our salary every month.

Last time kaya nanalo si erap meron siyang solid na 30% votes from class C,D,E,F etc. Yung natitirang class A at B naghati hati sa dami ng presidential candidates kaya siya nanalo. Sana ngayon wag ng maulit ito. problema yung mga walang internet which is the majority boboto dahil sa binigyan sila ng pera ng kandidato at madaling bolahin.

It was my younger years when Erap ousted from Malacanang with full shame on him. I was high school student back then but I clearly understood what was happening. I might have been too young for political issues but I was matured enough to get involved. I even fought against my dumb-butt classmate in behalf of him through a debate during my english class discussing this not-so-glamorous issue that humiliated the entire archipelago before the rest of the world. It was seven years ago. Now that I acquired a fortunate job as a banker, I fully understand the impact of political instability in the country to our everyday's lives.
Seven years after, Erap is now back on the scene creating heroic deeds for Filipino in purpose of popularity, courting every Filipino for his political comeback in 2010. He even has commercial ad for a supplement. I don't know what it is but the ad sucks. After his pardon granted, he's been very busy visiting cities and provinces in the Philippines. His demographic target/market are those who are in class C and D -mostly illiterate and uneducated people.
What's the problem with us during election aside from fraudulent activity is the bigger population of poor than middle and filthy rich people. Correct me if I'm wrong but poor has more tendency to vote depending on self-gratification and popularity w/o considering the nation's benefits when voting wisely. Their illiteracy is an inhibition to choose a better leader over the nuisances. Majority of numbers making Erap as their president will come from class C, D and E and A and B will play between Ninoy, Villar and Chiz.
We became a victim once of an abusive leader together with his family and allies. So please do not vote for someone who can't even speak in straight English. How will he be able to communicate with world leaders if he doesn't even know how to speak in English grammatically. I mean, he does speak but it's too elementary. I'm sorry for being so personal but we have to consider this small detail that needs in public service.
Time to heal what has been damaged. All in all, whatever is the state of philippine economy and politics are just domino effect or consequence of what it brought to people. So learn from our history of putting someone in position because of popularity
This is the scenario that in the beginning someone trying to be a hero or someone who can help or save but in the end it will be totally backfired. It will happen to you Mr. former president! Earth to you!
