PNoy meets Murad at Palace
MANILA (UPDATE) - The historic meeting between President Aquino and Moro Islamic Liberation Front Chairman Al Haj Murad took place at the Palace, ahead of the signing of the Framework Agreement between the Government of the Philippines and the MILF scheduled at two in the afternoon Monday.
Murad was welcomed by Presidential Peace Adviser Ging Deles at the Palace, becoming the first MILF chair to step foot at the Palace.
The meeting was off limits to reporters.
But during the brief video opportunity, Murad was seen giving the President a peace gong.
The exchange of gifts took on a symbolic meaning.
Murad gently played the gong, saying that “This is the sound of peace.”
Aquino returned the gesture by giving Murad a miniature table top décor depicting the Filipino tradition of bayanihan.
“The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective,” the label of the décor read.
