Lawmakers ready to respond to crisis in VisMin - Belmonte
MANILA - House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte said he and his colleagues are ready to help victims in the quake-struck Visayan and Mindanao provinces.
“After we receive a thorough assessment of the damage in these places especially from your district representatives, the lower House is prepared to do its part to once again fully respond to this crisis. We shall offer whatever timely assistance is expected from us to help our brother Filipinos in these areas get back on their feet,” Belmonte said in a statement.
He asked those affected to keep abreast with advisories from authorities.
“Preparedness has been instrumental at saving many lives and arresting potentially larger property damage. Assessment particularly of our aging structures is called for as well,” he said.
He said the tragedy, which has so far claimed 28 lives, once again calls on Filipinos to exercise resiliency.
“This unfortunate natural disaster once again calls upon us to exercise the resiliency and bayanihan our nation is known for and purposely do our share as individuals and members of organizations to help those who have fallen victims and have been displaced as a result of this tragedy,” he said.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake occurred 2 kilometers southeast of Carmen town at 8:12 a.m. The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at a depth of about 33 kms.
