Loren sticks with NPC despite governors' vote
MANILA - Sen. Loren Legarda on Friday said she will remain with the opposition and her party, the Nationalist People's Coalition, despite the invitation of the League of Provinces of the Philippines to become the running mate of Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.
In a text message to ABS-CBN, Legarda thanked the governors for their trust and support but said she wished to focus on her efforts on hunger mitigation and climate change adaptation.
"I will stay with my party. There's much work to be done. I want to focus on my work. Will remain opposition. Thank you to them," Legarda said.
The senator earlier announced that she will bare her political plans next week. Barring any severe weather disturbance and other climatic matters, I will make my formal announcement within 10 days. I will give my formal decision on not only the position I will contest but also my progressive, patriotic and pro-environment platform," she said in a forum.
LPP spokesman Saranggani Governor Miguel Dominguez on Friday said the league, through a straw vote of its 25-man national executive consultative board, has endorsed a Teodoro-Legarda tandem for the 2010 polls.
Antique Gov. Sally Perez said that while they are aware that the two candidates are from different political parties, they are hoping to broker a coalition between the Lakas-Kampi CMD and the Nationalist People’s Coalition. She said many of her partymates in the NPC would prefer to stay with the administration coalition and they are hoping to have a presidential candidate from Lakas-Kampi and a vice-presidential candidate from the NPC.
Aurora Governor Bellafor Angara-Castillio said that while she doesn’t speak for her brother, LDP President and Senator Edgardo Angara, she remains supportive of the administration and Secretary Teodoro.
Dominguez said Teodoro met with them to discuss calamity relief efforts. He said the LPP raised P7 milion from their pooled calamity funds to help local governments affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
Perez said their decision was already elevated to the NPC’s leadership, including chairman Eduardo Danding Cojuangco, Teodoro’s uncle. She said like-minded NPC partymates hope that if the coalition fails to materialize, they will just be allowed to pick the candidates they will support. With a report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
