MANILA, Philippines - The Aquino administration continues to address hunger in the country, Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Tuesday.

He issued the statement in reaction to a reported study of the International Food Policy Research Institute saying that hunger incidence in the Philippines worsened.

Lacierda stressed that the Global Hunger Index's scope covered the years 2005-2010 and not 2011-2012.

He added that the Department of Social Welfare and Development has a supplemental feeding program for the poor with conditional cash transfer beneficiaries using money to buy rice.

Lacierda pointed out that the government has an early warning system to prevent malnutrition from happening in certain areas.

"As far as we are concerned, we have data to show that we are addressing the hunger issue and we are mitigating hunger. So we are directly addressing the issue on hunger," Lacierda said.
