MANILA, Philippines - Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes became the apple of the eye of rosary-bearing senior citizen senatorial candidate Norma Nueva while she was pleading her candidacy with the poll body today.
Brillantes and Nueva had a light exchange during the hearing when she was being asked about her background, platform of government and qualification for public office.
Nueva said she was "very much available, it will be an honor to have the chairman as my future [partner]," a remark that left Brillantes in stitches.
Commissioner Rene Sarmiento then asked Nueva: “May asim pa?"
She replied amid cheers from the gallery: “Maasim pa po sa isang sakong kamias at kamatis."
Nueva later turned to Brillantes and said, "You look very happy and handsome at that. Tumitibok ang puso ko. Naramdaman kong tumibok."
Nueva said she was a widow, prompting a comment from Brillantes, "20 years na ako biyudo."
Nueva then said: "Malungkot di ba?"
Brillantes recoiled from the remark.
Nueva is among the 14 called by the Comelec today to justify their candidacies.
Another scene stealer among the 16 is Melchor Chavez, a senatorial candidate who filed under the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan.
Chavez, a habitual filer, said he wants to make the nation great again. He also discussed the Maguindanao massacre.
Alma Abella, who also filed under the KBL, remarked "there's a lot of idiots in this country," amid the confusion over the signatories on her certificate of nomination and acceptance (CONA). Abella's CONA was not signed by the authorized party representative.
Singer Victor Wood and Chavez were represented by their counsel, Ely Pamatong.
Another aspirant, Salam Lacam Liusong Tagean, presented documents to prove his ownership of the Philippines.
Five of those summoned today were no-shows.
Brillantes later on said during an ambush interview that they are now considering 1 or 2 from today's session for possible inclusion in the final list of senatorial candidates.
He said he already has one person in mind from yesterday's session.
Brillantes, however, said that the en banc will still have to meet on the fate of those they heard, with a resolution possibly coming out Friday next week.
