(UPDATE) Loren announces VP bid
MANILA - Ending months of speculation, Sen. Loren Legarda declared Friday her intention to run for vice-president in the 2010 elections.
"Opo, magdedeklara na po ako. Hangarin kong maglingkod ng walang humpay, walang pasubali at may malinaw na plataporma sa paglilingkod sa ating bansa," Legarda said in a rally at Rizal Park in Manila.
Running under a "pro-poor, pro-environment" platform, the senator said it was her intention to educate and protect every Filipino from the effects of poverty and climate change. She blamed the devastation wrought by Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng on poor urban governance, vulnerable livelihoods and decline of ecosystems.
"We all need a strong economy but it should be felt by every sector and every Filipino. No Filipino should die for lack of money for hospitalization or lack of medicine. No Filipino should die of hunger because they have no food. We should take care of the farmers and the fishermen. We should help feed the people who are feeding us," she said.
In declaring her bid to once again run for the second highest office of the land, Legarda pointed to her humanitarian work as the main reason for her bid and said she was “heeding the call of the people.” She told reporters that she was running under the Nationalist People's Coalition banner.
A few minutes after she ended her speech, the middle portion of the 4x6 meter stage gave way, prompting her security escorts to come to her rescue and swiftly bring her to the left side of the stage. Legarda was not hurt.
Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco, former presidential adviser Avelino Razon, Antique Gov. Sally Perez, former Nueva Ecija Gov. Tommy Joson, other representatives of groups from General Santos City, Quezon City, Laguna and other urban poor and Muslim groups attended the program that followed Legarda’s Lingkod Loren outreach mission at the Rizal Monument.
Asked who will be her running mate, Legarda said she is ready to team up with anybody who is ready to work with the same vision she has for the country to move forward economically and through good governance.
“I have outlined by pro-people, pro-country and pro-God agenda… Whoever who can match my platform of government, I am ready to join,” Legarda said in a press conference after the program.
Rep. Cojuangco, for his part, defended the absence of NPC chairman Danding Cojuangco, saying his father need not be present because he has become a “senior statesman” who sees things from a higher point of view.
“He is a senior statesman. Nanood na lang siya (He just watched). My father has done his part for the society,” the congressman said without elaborating.
Cojuangco earlier said the NPC will field Senators Francis 'Chiz' Escudero for president and Legarda for vice-president in the May 2010 elections.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Cojuangco said his father is committed to supporting the Chiz-Loren tandem and the rest of the NPC candidates in next year's national and local elections. He belied reports that his father may also back Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD party. With Philippine Star
