MANILA, Philippines – The camp of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has formally asked the Supreme Court to stop the Sandiganbayan from hearing a plunder case filed against her.

In a petition for certiorari and prohibition, the Arroyo camp asked the Supreme Court to set aside the findings of the Office of the Ombudsman and the Sandiganbayan that there is probable cause to prosecute her and 9 others for the alleged plunder of P366 million in Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) funds.

It noted that the plunder complaint is defective for lack of sufficient evidence against the former President.

The Supreme Court, which is packed by Arroyo appointees, is led by Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno. She is an appointee of Arroyo’s successor, President Aquino.

The Sandiganbayan is set to arraign Mrs. Arroyo on Monday, October 29.

Mrs. Arroyo is currently under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center. With a report by Alex Calda, radio dzMM
