Election violence up ahead of bgy polls
MANILA - Election-related violence is on the upswing ahead of the October 28 barangay elections, a Philippine National Police official said Thursday.
Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesman, said at least 30 incidents of election-related violence have been reported ahead of Monday's election/
Twenty-two of the 30 incidents resulted in death.
The number is slightly higher compared to the last barangay polls in 2010 when there were 25 reported cases. On the other hand, the latest numbers are lower than the 101 election-related incidents in 2007.
Over 500 people have also been arrested by the PNP for violating the gun ban.
Meanwhile, the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have activated their joint security monitoring centers in preparation for Monday's polls.
