MANILA, Philippines - Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle is consoled, but terrified of the task at hand as a new cardinal.

In his statement issued after Pope Benedict XVI announced the news, Tagle said: “To be called to collaborate with the Pope as a Cardinal both consoles and ‘terrifies’ me.”

He said he is terrified by the “magnitude” of the tasks ahead.

“It is significant that the call to be a Cardinal came with the canonization of San Pedro Calungsod, the Year of Faith and the Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization," he said.

Tagle’s appointment comes less than a week after the Pope formally named Pedro Calungsod as the country’s second saint.

Nonetheless, Tagle said he is “consoled by the trust and love that the Pope shows to me, to the Archdiocese of Manila and indeed to the whole Church in the Philippines. He wants to hear us and to benefit from our experiences of faith and mission. I am also consoled by the assurances of prayer and support from so many people.”

During a general audience at St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said he will hold a consistory for Tagle and five other new cardinals on November 24.

“The Cardinals have the task of helping the Successor of Peter in the performance of his ministry of confirming the brethren in the faith, and the principle and foundation of unity and communion of the Church,” the Pope said.

As a new cardinal, Tagle will become a representative in case of a conclave. The College of Cardinals meet to elect a new pope.

CBCP News said those over 80 years old have not been counted as active in the college ever since 1970.

The 55-year-old Manila archbishop will be the seventh Filipino cardinal.
