Comelec won't proclaim over 500 barangay bets
MANILA - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday ordered the suspension of the possible proclamation of over 500 barangay candidates who face challenges to their qualifications.
The order to suspend was issued motu propio by the concerned Comelec divisions.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said the order covers 8 candidates facing petitions to be declared as nuisance candidates, 7 facing executory dismissals by the Ombudsman, over 400 candidates whose voter registrations have been questioned, and 62 candidates on their 3rd term.
Brillantes said this is a small percentage of the over 800,000 barangay candidates nationwide.
He explained this is a precautionary measure until the poll body has ruled on the merits of the pending cases.
In an earlier briefing, Brillantes estimated the number of those facing suspension of proclamation at around 300.
