MANILA, Philippines - A senatorial aspirant is protesting her being declared a nuisance candidate by the Commission on Elections. She is also denying reports that she flirted with Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes.

Norma Nueva, a 75-year-old widow, mother of 8 and grandmother of 26, came to the Comelec and addressed the media.

The rosary-bearing Nueva filed her certificate of candidacy for senator in early October.

“I did not flirt with the chairman. We just have a very pleasant conversation considering I’ m a widow, he’s a widower and we discussed the lives of single mothers and single fathers. The word flirt doesn’t sound healthy for a bible preacher like me. I want to correct the premise I was called a flirt,” she said.

Nueva also clarified her utterance of the word “asim” in the interviews conducted by the Comelec en banc on those who failed the initial screening. A woman who is described to be “may asim pa” is anyone who can still attract men’s attention despite old age.

“The word ‘asim’ is being misinterpreted by people with dirty minds. Asim means I still have the power to wage a national campaign. That asim doesn’t mean kaalembongan,” Nueva said.

Nueva personally confronted Chairman Brillantes at the Comelec about her being declared a nuisance candidate, saying she has the backing of the Partido ng Manggagawa and Magsasaka and the 1-vote Movement.

Nueva originally filed her certificate of candidacy under the Kilusang Bagong Lipuna. The KBL, however, withdrew all the certificates of nomination and acceptance (CONA) it issued.

Brillantes said substitution of CONAs is not allowed so Nueva is considered an independent.
