Over 90% of barangay poll winners proclaimed
MANILA - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it expects to finish today the proclamation of all winners in the recently concluded barangay elections.
"We have proclaimed over 90% of the winners, about 39,000 out of the 42,000 [barangays]. We should be able to finish it today," Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said in an ANC interview.
Brillantes said elections were delayed in some barangays due to security reasons and delays in the delivery of election paraphernalia.
Elections are ongoing in 9 barangays in Maguindanao and 6 barangays in Basilan. Initial reports from the Comelec also said 51 barangays in Lanao del Sur did not conduct elections due to security reasons.
The Comelec chief earlier said the poll body has ordered the suspension of the possible proclamation of over 500 barangay bets who are facing challenges to their qualifications.
Brillantes said the order covers 8 candidates facing petitions to be declared as nuisance candidates, 7 facing executory dismissals by the Ombudsman, over 400 candidates whose voter registrations have been questioned, and 62 candidates on their third term.
