MANILA - Malacañang on Friday asked oil companies to stop scaring people by making dire projections of oil price increases once the government-imposed price ceilings on basic products are lifted.
"We appeal to [oil companies] to stop making grim warnings [and] dire projections," Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said during a media briefing at Malacañang.
The statement was in reaction to oil companies' projection of P5 increase in pump prices once the controversial Executive Order 839 is lifted.
EO 839 directs oil companies to "retain the level of the retail price of petroleum products prevailing on October 15, 2009, which was one week after the last landfall of typhoon 'Pepeng'." Apart from the likely increase in oil prices, big businesses warned the order could result in tight oil supply and low investment in the industry.
Fernando Martinez, chairman of the Independent Philippine Petroleum Companies Association, told ABS-CBN Umagang Kay Ganda that big and small oil companies are starting to feel the effects of the oil price cap.
Martinez, meanwhile, clarified that the projected P5 increase will be implemented gradually to ease the burden on consumers.
Remonde, for his part, said that Malacañang understands that the oil companies, just like any other corporation, are after big profits. He said he does not believe that giant oil companies would go bankrupt because of the oil price caps.
"It's expected from businessmen. They all want profit, but we do not want to deny them of legitimate profit," he said. "After all they will continie to make business with us and continue to make profit. We are just asking them to please understand the situation."
The presidential spokesman, meanwhile, denied that the government is already considering to partially lift the price cap.
Reports said that according to Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera that there is a possiblity of a partial lifting of the executive order.
Remonde said he has personally asked Devanadera about the supposed statement, but the justice secretary has denied it. He added that the justice secretary has assured him that she is not planning to recommend the partial lifting of the order to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
