MANILA, Philippines – Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is preparing for his fight in the political arena in 2013 and 2022.

Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum bared Pacquiao’s alleged political plan during an interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, a day before the Filipino boxing champion’s bout with Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas.

“By the year 2013, he’ll be a governor of Sarangani province, hopefully,” said Arum.

Arum added, “Being a governor, it’s a lot more time consuming than being a congressman and so he’s going to have to devote himself to governing a province and then of course, this boxing is just a means, for at least as I see it, for the end game”.

The “end game," Arum said is the year 2022, when Pacquiao is already eligible to run in the presidential elections.

“The end game is 2022. He got to be 40 years old to run for president and that's the first election that he'll be eligible to run for president,” Arum said.

Arum said he was with Pacquiao during the two times the boxer-politician ran for public office.

“Manny had me over. He ran twice. First time we weren’t prepared, we lost. Second time, a landslide right?” he said with a smile.

No matter what happens, Arum said he will be there to help Pacquiao even if he has to come to the Philippines as an old man with his cane.

“In 2022, I'll be 91 years of age. I'll come in my cane, but I'll help him,” he said.

Witness in oath-taking as president

Veteran boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz echoed Arum’s statement.

In an interview with Dateline Philippines, Nathanielsz said Pacquiao had also indicated to him his desire to try and take a shot at the highest political office in the land.

“’I am going to pray that you will live to see me take my oath as president.' Sinabi niya sa akin. Three different times he said, "I am going to pray for you and I want you to stand behind when I take my oath as president," he recalled.

“I got to survive 2022 to see Pacquiao. He's going to pray for me. I hope his prayers are answered,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the same CNN interview, Pacquiao reiterated his dream of helping the poor.

“Because I've been there, I came from nothing and I know the feeling to need something...I want to give back and help them,” Pacquiao said.

He also expressed his wish to “fix” the problem of corruption in the government and change the bad image some people may have against politicians.

“So we have to fix that and show to them that not all of them are corrupt. There's a Manny Pacquiao who is honestly serving the people,” he said.
