Bolante lone guest on hot seat for fertilizer fund scam probe
Former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn "Jocjoc" Bolante will be the only resource person to be grilled by senators in the reopening of the P728-million fertilizer fund scam investigation.
A copy of the Senate Blue-Riboon Committee's agenda obtained by ABS-CBN News' Ricky Carandang showed that Bolante was the only person invited for the resumption of the hearing.
Bolante will be joined by his lawyer, Antonio Zulueta, who will be sitting behind him throughout the hearing, which will start 9:30 a.m.
Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, panel chairman, had promised to try to squeeze the truth about the fertilizer fund scam from Bolante during the hearing.
Cayetano, however, was not sure if senators who will be grilling Bolante will be able to make the former agriculture undersecretary reveal more details of the alleged misuse of the fertilizer fund in 2004.
"Although we wouldn't want to keep the people's hopes up, I know that the time will come that he will be forced to speak the truth," he said in an interview on ABS-CBN's "Umagang kay Ganda."
Several senators had said Bolante may only invoke his right against self-incrimination if asked about the sensitive details of the fertilizer fund.
There were expectations that Bolante would just deny allegations that he masterminded the illegal distribution of the fund.
"When he tells the truth, it'll be easier for us to proceed with the investigation. If he chooses to make up a story, the Senate will eventually find out that he's hiding something, and that'll still get us closer to finding out what really happened," the senator said.
Former senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr., former chairman of the Senate agriculture committee, was expected to sit with other senators during the hearing.
It was unsure, however, if Magsaysay will be allowed by Cayetano's committee to ask questions to Bolante.
The former senator said he had been waiting to face Bolante.
"I waited almost two and half years. I have not seen him (face to face). I want to see him this morning," Magsaysay said.
