Belmonte joins LP, backs Noynoy
MANILA - Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte said Thursday that he moved to the Liberal Party (LP) because he sees the qualities of the late President Corazon Aquino in her only son, Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.
"We, Quezon City residents are fortunate that Cory left the legacy of a son who champions the same quality of an enlightened, dependable, trustworthy and morally upright leadership," Belmonte said in his speech before being formally sworn in as LP member at the Amoranto Multi-purpose Theater in Quezon City.
He added: "All of these qualities of Cory, I see in our new champion, Sen. Noynoy Aquino."
Belmonte said he decided to leave the Lakas-Kampi-CMD, where he held the post of senior vice-president for external affairs, because it is time to "stop and change direction" for the right path, which he sees in the new LP leadership, LP president and vice-presidential candidate Sen. Mar Roxas.
The Quezon City mayor was a member for 17 years of Lakas-CMD party, which has merged with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi).
Belmonte said Aquino's declaration that he is running for the presidency in 2010 made him realize that it was time for him to make the same sacrifice of leaving a very comfortable position when the late former President Corazon Aquino ran against the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.
He assured Sen. Aquino of his loyalty if he wins in next year's elections.
Reports said Belmonte is running again for a congressional seat in Quezon City.
Belmonte was a three-term representative of the 4th district of Quezon City from 1992 to 2001. He also became House Speaker and then ran successfully for QC mayor in 2001 and is currently on his third and last term.
His daughter, Joy, and Vice-Mayor Herbert Bautista were also formally sworn in as LP members.
Raymond Roquero, Lakas-Kampi-CMD's deputy secretary-general, said Belmonte's resignation would be a big loss to the ruling party because Quezon City is one of the vote-rich cities in the country.
Roquero said the ruling party will try to reach out to barangay leaders to maintain their base in the city.

Remulla said the issue affects taxpayers because of the loan component. “It's a heavy burden for taxpayers.”
