De Lima inspects Bilibid blast site
MANILA, Philippines - Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Monday conducted a surprise inspection of the grenade blast site inside the maximum security compound at the New Bilibid Prison.
The blast occurred last Friday dawn and injured 6 inmates.
De Lima viewed CCTV footage of the attack. The footage showed the grenade-thrower positioned meters away from a group of 7 inmates who were jogging at the time, before throwing the grenade.
The grenade-thrower wore an orange inmate shirt and knee-high denim shorts. His head was also covered with a towel.
De Lima said she will order the National Bureau of Investigation to enhance the CCTV footage to confirm the identity of the grenade-thrower. She refused to divulge the name of the suspect for now.
The justice chief also inspected bladed weapons and improvised firearms recovered from Bilibid inmates during a raid she ordered after the blast.
De Lima expressed dismay how weapons and cellular phones found their way inside the restricted area. She also ordered a more thorough search for more "sophisticated" weapons.
"Bakit nakakapasok ang mga ganyan dito? Yan din ang tanong ni Presidente," she told officials of the state penitentiary headed by Bureau of Corrections OIC Manuel Co.
De Lima also met with prison custodian officials.
