MANILA – Former president Joseph Estrada announced Sunday that he is filing his certificate of candidacy (CoC) for president on November 30 to coincide with the country's commemoration of Bonifacio Day.
Estrada made the announcement during the inauguration of the Makati track and field oval Sunday morning. Estrada ran the entire track with Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, his running mate in the 2010 national elections.
The ousted president said he and Binay will go to the main office of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Intramuros, Manila around noon. Estrada and Binay will reportedly ride a jeepney from Liwasang Bonifacio to Intramuros when they file their CoCs.
Estrada earlier announced that he would file his CoC on November 27, but decided to move it to November 30. He said November 30 is significant because the country is commemorating the birth of one of the country’s heroes, Andres Bonifacio.
Like Bonifacio, Estrada, an actor who built up a pro-poor image throughout his movie career, reiterated that he is for the welfare of the masses, who comprise a large percentage of the population.
“[We’re filing on November 30] to symbol that we are really Pwersa ng Masa because Andres Bonifacio is the hero of the masa,” Estrada said.
Estrada’s camp, meantime, has yet to complete its senatorial slate. Estrada said he already invited former senator Sergio Osmeña III to join Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP)-PDP Laban coalition party as its guest candidate.
Osmena bolted the Liberal Party led by Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III after it admitted to its senatorial line-up former socio-economic planning chief Ralph Recto.
Estrada added that the party might also invite Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., who is seeking re-election next year.
Before November 30, Estrada said, the Pwersa ng Masa will release its final line-up.
The filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2010 elections began Friday. It’s now on its third day, but would-be candidates seem to be biding their time.
On Saturday, reports said not a single CoC was filed before the COMELEC. Reports from Abner Mercado, ABS-CBN News, ANC, and Ricky Velasco, radio dzMM
