Miriam on massacre: 'Neanderthal brutality'
MANILA - Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) at the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office in Intramuros on Friday morning.
Santiago is seeking re-election under her political party, People's Reform Party (PRP), but she is a guest candidate of 5 political parties, including President Joseph Estrada's opposition party, Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP).
Before joining the opposition, Santiago was an administration lawmaker.
Journalists covering the COMELEC asked Santiago about her comments on the massacre of 57 people in Ampatuan town in Maguindanao province.
She described the unacceptable act as “Neanderthal brutality”.
“Can you imagine that in the 21st century, someone has the mentality to prepare well in advance the murder of 57 people and the destruction of several vehicles and expect to get away with impunity, without any criminal liability?”
“This is Neanderthal brutality. We could accept it if it happened among cavemen, but we cannot accept that it has happened in the 21st century,” she said.
On Thursday, Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., the alleged mastermind in the massacre, submitted himself to authorities. He is now being held at the National Bureau of Investigation (NB) and will be slapped with multiple murder charges.
Santiago emphasized that the principal suspects in the crime of terrorism should also include police and military officials.
“Under the Anti-Terrorism Act or the Human Security Act of 2007, they should already have conducted surveillance because even the civilians knew about an impending catastrophic disaster,” she added. With ANC

AMPITUAN TOWN
We do name barrios, town and cities in recognition of our dead politician. However, in the southern part of the Philippines, we name this places to make known to their rivals clan that they are approaching someone's territory. Poor Mindanao, they will never see prosperity for a long long time until this kind of barbaristic act of inhumane killing of citizenry is wipeout of this region. Hence the killing of 57 innocent civilians will be the benchmark of how territorial clan exist right under the noses of our civil laws. Chic! chic! chic! They are just second to Saddam Hussien. And the only penalty for this crime is like Clint Eastwood's movie "Hang Them High". It will be good for the underdog clan to initiate this. They can call for all Freemasons in Mindanao to arm themselves for an all out cleansing of the clan.

Noon kahit mga ibang lahi rito may paghanga rin talaga sa Pinoy hindi lang sipag bilang OFW at dahil rin sa ipinakita nina Manny P. at Efren P. Sila mga private citizen na nag-aangat at nagbibigay ng karangalan sa ngalan ng Filipino at bansa Pilipinas, pero ang mga nakaupong mga politiko at mga miyembro ng gobyerno lalo na ang ating Pangulo sila naman ang gumagawa ng hindi magandang ehemplo, at ibinabagsak lalo ng hinding magandang larawan ng bansang Pinas. Paano ma-encourage ng mga dayuhan para mag-invest sa bansa natin kung ganito ang klase ng mga pulitiko natin.
Kunting tiis na lang mga kapatid malapit na ang elction, sino ulit ang pipiliin nating mamuno sa atin, mga katula ba ng mga ARROYO, AMPATUAN, LAPID, naku tatakbo naman siya ulit, ano nga ba ang nagawa niya sa Senado at Pampanga bilang governor noon. Gumising na tayo, iboto natin ang mga candidato na may malinis na prinsipyo at may talino. HINDI iyong nambubutas ng kaban ng bayan.

For my opinion sadyang nagbubulag bulagan lang ang mga awtoridad dahil nga galamay ni Gloria ang mga iyan. Pwede ring nasa payroll ng Ampatuan ang mga pulis at military doon kaya tama lang si Sen. Mirriam. Pati mga nasamsam na baril ay panahon pa ng hapon at para rin sa akin hindi gagawa ng ganoon si Andal Jr. kung hindi alam ng Andal Sr., Ganyan ang mga Muslim, sinusunod ang utos ng ama. Ang mga pangalan ng muslim ay laging kasunod ang pangalan ng ama bilang pagsunod rito. Kaya nagpunta roon si Dureza para planuhin ang depensa at maaaring si Andal Jr. lamang ipakulong. Balita namin mayroong isang daang ford expedition ang mga Ampatuans, masyado silang mayaman sa pagiging dikit sa Malacanang. Kawawa ang mga mangudadatu at kawawa rin ang sambayanan.
