Rosales: PGMA has failed leadership test
'Corrupt have no right to hold public office'
MANILA - She wants to continue serving the people, but President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in her 9 years in Malacañang, has failed the test of leadership, as far as Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales is concerned.
To the prelate, only two only two out of the 14 Philippine presidents have passed the grade of admirable leadership: Ramon Magsaysay and Corazon Aquino.
In an interview with CBCPNews, the official information service of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Rosales said only Magsaysay and Aquino have the "outstanding qualities” worthy of emulation of future leaders.
“Twice upon a time, God gave us these two as examples of good leadership,” Rosales said.
Rosales did not mention Arroyo or Estrada although he obliquely described their respective administrations as those that went against morality.
The cardinal said Magsaysay and Aquino were exceptional leaders for their simplicity and humility of heart. “I challenge anyone who would say otherwise. That is my perception,” Rosales said.
Magsaysay cited Magsaysay for his charisma with the common people, while Aquino is considered an icon of Philippine democracy.
Rosales issued the statement as candidates engaged in a mad scramble to beat the deadline of the filing of certificates of candidacies (COCs) for the May 10, 2010 national and local polls.
Presdient Arroyo joined the rush, filing her COC for Pampanga’s 2nd district on Tuesday, the last day of filing.
Agenda: Fight poverty, corruption
Rosales said Filipino voters should discern and vote for the candidates who can best address the country’s pressing problems—poverty and graft and corruption.
He implied the next President should address the problem of poverty first, and ending corruption second.
Rosales said poverty of all kinds has been the constant and unchanging fixture in the Filipinos’ way of life. “Poverty is a perennial issue. There is poverty created by man, cheating, stealing…there is poverty created by nature. Earthquakes, typhoons."
He added: “We should ask ourselves: Why is there poverty? Is it because we lack technology, lack of basic services or is there poverty because of man-made reasons?”
While poverty should be tackled first, graft and corruption should be seriously addressed just the same because it “doubles” the effect of poverty, he said.
Attending Masses not a good basis
Stressing that the Church will not endorse a particular candidate, Rosales said, however, that voters are well advised to choose someone who truly fears God and practices moral living.
“The first criterion should be, he or she should be God-fearing. Number 2, he or she should be moral. Fear of God is not enough.”
Rosales said one’s faith to God cannot be measured by pronouncements of being a devout Catholic or being seen regularly in churches attending Holy Masses.
“Katakot-takot na pampabababae, pagsusugal, pang-aagaw mo sa ibang tao, pagsisinungaling, pagpupuslit…that man or woman has no right to hold office,” he said.
In his short tenure as president, Estrada was hounded by criticisms of his coterie, lavish treatment of his women, and nocturnal gambling activities. Estrada has accused the Catholic Church of conniving with vested interest groups to oust him in January 2001.
Corrupt have no right to public office
Arroyo, on the other hand, has been accused of rigging the 2004 presidential elections and has been linked to various graft and corruption incidents.
Rosales said: “Those who are corrupt have no right to hold public office.”
Arroyo is a devout Catholic, and, at one time, invoked the Pope, Christ’s representative on earth, as urging her to seek the presidency.
But local bishops apparently see things in a different way.
A number of them have advised the President to drop her plans of seeking a congressional post in the 2nd district of Pampanga for propriety’s sake.
Former CBCP President Angel Lagdameo said Arroyo should “not give in to temptation” while Catarman bishop Emmanuel Trance said she should observe “political delicadeza.”
Former CBCP President Oscar Cruz said Arroyo, a cabalen, “is addicted to power,” and is targeting the post of prime minister once the form of government is changed from presidential to parliamentary.
Kapal muks ni Rosales
How dare Cardinal Rosales citicised president Arroyo when he himself is not a good leader either. Why not he cooperate na lang instead to the programs of the government, hindi na nga siya nakakatulong, may mukha pa siyang sumaway.
How dare Cardinal Rosales compare President Arroyo to Cory Aquino, nakalimutan na ba ni Cardinal ang Mendiola Massacre? the 7 coup de etat? GMA's performance is incomparable to Cory's, ano bang nagawa ni Cory, di ba mas lalong bumaba ang pera natin? Perhaps we heard not so much intrigues kay Cory dahil wala naman siyang nagawa, likewise with Noynoy, likewise with the church especially Rosales.
I strongly urge Cardinal Rosales to run as president also so he could do what must be done to our country, hindi yung puro paninira lamang. How I wonder the Philippine Catholic Church under the leadership of Cardinal Rosales will have the courage to come out in the open like what the Irish Catholic Church did and expose the abuses of the church to its believers. I dare Cardinal Rosales!
PAUSAPAN NA LANG NATIN SI KRIS
PARDON ME SIR AND MADAM. PATAWARIN NA LANG NINYO SINA CARDINAL AT MGA OBISPO. MA-STRESS LANG KAYO. MABUTI MGA IGAN PAGUSAPAN NA LANG NATIN SI KRIS MEDYO INTERESTING PA. ALAM MO MGA IGAN ANG KAPAL DIN KRIS. PATI NAMAN PULSERAS NI MOTHER LILY GUSTO PANG HINGIIN. YONG PULSERAS NA YON AY SINUOT NI KORINA SA KASAL NILA NI MAR. LAHAT MAKITA NIYA GUSTO NIYANG HINGIIN. NAPAKABASTOS NA NAMAN NIYA HINDI MAGHINTAY NG BIGAY. NAKAHIYA PATI MGA UTOL NIYA MAPIPINTASAN. KAWAWANG NOYNOY NAUUBOS NA ANG BUHOK SA PROBLEMA NIYA SA KAPATID NIYA. ABA BOY PAGSABIHAN MO NAMAN ANG KAIBIGAN MO HUWAG PALAHINGI. KWENTO NOONG KAIBIGAN KO SA LONDON, MUNTIK NA RAW HINGIIN NI KRIS YONG KORONA NI QUEEN ELIZABETH. KAYA LANG NAKAPAGTAGO ANG REYNA. IT'S A JOKE
Nonsense
It is interesting that the Church still gets involved in politics in the RP. No modern successful country or economy allows the Church (or any religious organization) to be as involved in its politics. It is interesting that anyone in the RP should listen at all to the Church about how to run a modern state as they really have no background on economics, business, technology, science or other things that are needed to create a modern state.
"Tackle poverty"? A fine recommendation from an institution that continues to back the old money families (like the Aquinos), is against birth control and abortion (let's face it RP growth rates are eaten up by its out of control growth and lack of sensible population control policies), and in the name of supposed human or workers rights - it opposes obvious areas of economic growth and development for the country like mining or other heavy industries.
The church really should just stick to spiritual needs and saving souls - not telling governments how to run things.
The church failed to set leadership examples
The gall of this Cardinal to even speak of leadership. GMA is Roman Catholic. The same with Erap and Marcos. Except for Ramos, all Philippine Presidents are Roman Catholics. And yet some of these Presidents made questionable and horrible actions in the past. They were Roman Catholics. So who really failed the test of leadership?
No other than the Roman Catholic Church itself. The Cardinal forgot that the church have failed time and time again to provide moral and leadership values and these failure results to a lot of hardships for a lot of people. The church abhorred gays and brand them as immoral, and yet the priesthood is infiltrated by pedophiles. Yan ba ang good leadership my dear Cardinal? You see the faults of others and you see yourself above them but in reality, tao ka lang. Hindi ka santo.
Ang madalas na excuse ng simbahan is "the church merely sets the path to walk on, it's the person that decides where to go". If that's the case, ANO ANG SILBI NINYO? It's time to stop this. You and your ilk is not above us. Stop thinking of yourselves as elite and go down to earth and see how we are all doing. But one thing's for use my dear Cardinal, THE CHURCH FAILED TO SET LEADERSHIP EXAMPLES to Marcos, Erap and Arroyo. And for that, the church itself shares responsibility for their failures.
Gloria At Simbahan
GMA CANT HELP PAMPANGA
IF MY FELLOW KABALENS THINK THEY WOULD VOTE GMA SO THEY CAN HELP THEM WITH THEIR DEVELOPMENT. THINK AGAIN VERY HARD. . . AN OPPOSTION PRESIDENT WILL WIN AND THAT'S 100% CERTAINTY. . JUST LIKE WHAT GMA TO OPPOSTION CONGRESSMEN, GMA WONT GET A PESO FOR HER PROJECTS, NOYNOY OR VILLAR WILL DEFITELY BLOCK ALL HER PROPOSALS. . AND SHE WOPNT GET THE SPEAKERSHIP AS CONGRESS WILL BE DOMINATED BY OPPOSTION CONGRESSMEN
WHERE ARE YOU WHEN WE NEEDED YOU?
With all due respect to the Bishops, kaya po umabuso ang gobyerno dahil sa pagiging passive at pananahimik nyo, WHERE ARE YOU WHEN WE NEEDED YOU? 6 years ago ng nangyari ang Hello garci, where are you, ng si Lozada binigay nya ang lahat where are you? Now what would you expect, this is a good example of a story of batrayal, KUNG ANG PASTOL PINABAYAAN ANG MGA TUPA NA PAGHARIAN NG MASASAMANG NILALANG, wala silang magawa kundi ang sumunod na lang! The comments of the bishops are wortless anymore its to late. The damage has been done!!!
