US gov't 'watching' martial law implementation
Kenney warns vs human rights violations
MANILA - US Ambassador Kristie Kenney on Saturday said the US government is monitoring the implementation of martial law in Maguindanao and warned authorities against committing human rights violations.
“I think, like many others, the United States will be watching to see how it's implemented, watching carefully to make sure human rights are respected,” Kenney said.
Kenney said she has yet to talk to Philippine officials on how they intend to implement it.
“I'll be interested to hear from them. How they intend to implement this? How long will this be in place, and how we're doing on the investigation and on creating the kind of conditions so that Maguindanao never again sees this kind of massacre, and that development, prosperity increase and improve there,” she said.
The US embassy in Manila issued a travel advisory for Maguindanao following the massacre of at least 57 people.
“We have a travel advisory in place already for Maguindanao based on the massacre. We'll look at that and see if it needs to be changed. But I think, for the moment, that stands,” she said.
More questions and fears about martial law still emerged hours after Malacañang declared it in Maguindanao province.
Detained rebel soldier, Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, suspects that the government’s motive in imposing martial law in Maguindanao is to “whitewash its own involvement in the status quo of fear and terror in Mindanao”.
Lim said the declaration is a “clear sign that Mrs. Arroyo is using all her multiple trump cards in an attempt to be in power forever."
According to Lim, the military lacks the necessary consciousness and mindset to implement martial law, adding “the tendency to abuse such power is very high”.
Lim is running as an independent senatorial candidate in the 2010 elections. However, the Liberal Party has adopted him as a guest candidate.

Let’s be realistic
The US Ambassador is right to voice her concern, please all keep in mind that it’s not just the Philippine Nation who is watching this investigation on this hideous crime. Lets all be thankful that the world is watching, otherwise Arroyo would have put the whole country under ML in an attempt to silence her former allies, the murderous Ampatuan’s.
Nobody know what kind of bullshit Arroyo is scheming up now, lets hope for the sake of this proud Nation, the world will look at what she is doing and step in if necessary.
My main concern is that the corrupt military and police, who was involved in the massacre in the first place, is trying to cover their tracks in the involvement.
It’s a shame that such a great and proud nation is run by a person who’s only concern are not the people but how to fill their Swiss bank accounts and that of their cronies.
You all deserve better, and lets be honest, if you look who is running for the number one job in government right now, do you think they will do it any different way????
I will pray that the new administration will clean up this mess, and gets rid of all the corrupt officials, starting from the bottom.
Look at Singapore, if a police officer would take a bribe and gets caught, and believe me there they will and they know it, he will end up in jail, never mind how high his family connection is.
The custom officer at airports, they would never dream of accepting any money without issuing an official receipt.
The people in any government office, they will help you and issue you a receipt and the money goes into the government account not into their own pocket.
It will take time to clean up what happened in the last 20 years and I do blame the USA as well because when they were based in the Philippines, they paid off officials too to get things done in a fast way, they, the USA, were breading corruption in the palace and high up army and police offices.
Next election, you all have the power to vote for the one honest person out there, there must be one, and make sure to keep all the Arroyos and her alike away from any government post, they should not even be allowed to clean the government toilets because they will steal the toilet paper.
God Bless The Philippines And Their People
Self righteous?
What? She can't voice her concern? And dirty Filipino politicians can just so they'll have something to say about it for their own campaign benefit?
You talk about the US not in a position to talk about morality based on it's human rights violation on terrorists in a war? NO COUNTRY IS IN A POSITION you ignorant Mr. Know it All wannabe. What country out there hasn't committed some form human rights violation? No one..
Everyone remembers pictures of those naked Iraqi prisoners piled on top of each other. They weren't naked Iraqis, they were naked terrorists. And did you remember those 5000+ people who went to work in New York on September 11, 2001. I'm sure they'll tell you their human rights were violated. Not just violated but ended so Uncle Sam went to war against those terrorists.
When the Manila was devastated by mother nature (with the help of incompetent city engineers who could've done things to prevent the flooding), Uncle Sam stopped whatever he was doing (helping Filipino soldiers train against those terrorist in Mindanao, and other missions somewhere in the Pacific) and went to Manila to help, while the Philippine government sat on their asses watching the tragic event unfold. I don't remember a thank you extended to Uncle Same.
So stop talking like you know a damn thing..
Uncle Sam
The Ambassador is just voicing her concern for the People in Mindanao. It's not fair that we only welcome Uncle Sam with his bags of goodies in time of crises, when the Philippine government is caught flatfooted and ill-prepared to help its own citizens.
self righteous uncle sam
the US is not in a position to talk about morality and human rights violations considering the immoral acts committed by their soldiers against Iraqis. Whatever happened to that video footage of iraqis being stripped naked and forced to sodomize each other by both male and female US soldiers. Come on, stop being self righteous and just clean up your own yard first, madam ambassador.
