Senate ready to hold trial for Corona
MANILA, Philippines - The Senate is ready to hold a trial in case an impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Renato Corona in the House of Representatives prospers and is submitted to the chamber, senators said on Monday.
"The Senate should be laging handa (always ready) pagdating sa impeachment," said Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III.
In a separate interview, Sen. Francis Escudero told reporters that should the impeachment reach the Senate, the senators are "always willing and able to perform our constitutional duty."
Last March, the Senate approved its rules and finished other preparations for the impeachment trial of then Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez. But she resigned even before the trial started.
Sotto and other senators, however, refused to comment on whether or not there is enough basis for an impeachment move, because they will sit as judges once a complaint reaches the Senate.
"I think it's prudent and wise for me not to give any comment regarding any impeachment moves," Sen. Panfilo Lacson said.
