Ted Te is new SC PIO chief: sources
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has chosen her former colleague in the University of the Philippines, lawyer Theodore Te, as the new chief of the Supreme Court public information office (PIO), sources said.
"An announcement is forthcoming," one source said.
The spokesman is co-terminus with the Chief Justice, unless or until the appointment is revoked.
Nonetheless, the en banc still has to give its nod to the appointment. Sources said Sereno has not brought up the matter with the justices.
Te is also a friend of newly appointed Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, a former dean of the UP College of Law.
The appointment comes at a time when Sereno is facing backlash for her dignified silence stance, where no press conferences are held to announce or explain the court's rulings.
It is not yet known what the impact of Te's appointment will be on Sereno's public information policy.
Te is a pro bono human rights lawyer of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) and a former legal counsel of the University of the Philippines system.
ABS-CBNnews.com tried to contact Te but he was not taking calls, as of posting.
Sereno earlier tasked Ateneo School of Government Dean Antonio La Viña as PIO consultant.
In the history of the SC, there have been only two spokesmen: Ishmael Khan and Jose Midas Marquez. Marquez is still the incumbent Court Administrator.
