Gordon: Treat 'Sendong' dead with dignity
MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon on Tuesday said he is opposed to burying the corpses of storm victims if they have not been properly identified.
Gordon visited funeral parlors in Cagayan de Oro and was dismayed upon seeing the bodies sprawled on the ground due to lack of caskets. He said even the dead should be treated with dignity.
"Even if you are dead...there is such a thing as managing the dead with dignity. They are entitled to be identified. They are not just statistics. The families will want closure. People don't deserve to die like that or treated like that," he told ANC.
Gordon is asking local government officials to put the bodies in a warehouse where the families can go to claim their loves ones.
He said if the corpses are not properly tagged, some people may take advantage and make money out of the victims' remains.
