Sendong flood like a 'reverse tsunami': Acosta
MANILA, Philippines - Flash floods brought by tropical storm Sendong created a "reverse tsunami" that swept away entire communities in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro before washing out to sea, Presidential Adviser for Environmental Protection said Tuesday.
Acosta said President Aquino and members of his Cabinet conducted an aerial inspection of the hardest hit barangays in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City to survey the damage.
"It was a reverse tsunami. It came from the upland, that kind of onrush or flooding and sweeping of the entire barangays in the middle of the night. There are logs all over and roots of big trees," he told ANC's "Dateline Philippines."
Acosta blamed a number of factors for the disaster including the heavy rainfall brought by Sendong, massive deforestation and large-scale mining.
He said he even saw 5,000-6,000 logs "like a carpet" on the coast of Iligan. He added that officials believe many of the missing persons are trapped under the logs as evidenced by the stench.
Acosta said the devastation wrought by Sendong highlights the need for proper land use and identification of geohazard zones.
He said the national government should also clamp down on "unabated and institutional" deforestation in the country.

NASA got it right and predicted an Ondoy-like rain will hit mindanao. however, despite of this warning from NASA, noynoy and his boys in PAGASA didn't even bother to monitor the typhoon. instead, it was confirmed the noynoy is busy attending valerie conception's party while parts of nothern mindanao is being struck by an ondoy like storm.
the worse thing about it is that PAGSA didn't raise the alarm in notherm mindanao. the officials there swears that they didn't receive warning from PAGASA. i can recall several typhoons where PAGASA got it all wrong and where noynoy and his boys from PAGASA is always caught unprepared by the typhoons that hit the country. the death toll may increase by the seconds, minutes, hours and days as the numbers of miising persons were still in hundreds. it is more reliable to look outside of the window instead of relying to inaccurate wether forcasting from PAGASA.
i'm curious what Nilo will say about the boy of noynoy in PAGASA.
