MANILA, Philippines - Putting a stress on his "freedom to rest," Malacañang appealed to the public not to bother President Benigno Aquino III while he is on vacation in Baguio.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said they understand many people would like to visit Aquino as he goes for some rest and recreation, but the Chief Executive also needs space to rest.

Lacierda stressed there are other public officials who can attend to the affairs of government while Aquino is on a break.

Lacierda pointed out that Aquino went on this break as suggested by Health Secretary Enrique Ona.

Lacierda said Aquino should be left alone to have some time for himself when he doesn't have to work, adding he remains in touch with government officials on state matters. "Give him freedom to rest properly,” he said.

Aquino's predecessor, former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo was known to go on working vacations in Baguio -- summoning Cabinet officials as needed, meeting with local leaders and businessmen or inspecting a nearby government project.

Meantime, Lacierda could not yet confirm reports of a new position for Aquino's bosom friend, former Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Rico Puno at the Department of Agriculture.

Likewise, there is no decision yet on who will be replacing Ed de Mesa as chief presidential legal counsel.
