MANILA, Philippines - Nine in 10 Filipinos view 2013 with hope, according to a new Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.

The 92% of Filipinos hopeful of the coming year is just 3 points below the record-high 95% recorded in 2002, 2003 and 2011, SWS said in a statement.

The figure was among the findings in the polling group's 4th Quarter 2012 Social Weather Survey, which was held from December 8 to 11.

SWS official Iremae Labucay said hope with the coming year has customarily been at high levels, starting at 87% in December 2000.

It was lowest at 81% in December 2004.

The private polling agency, however, said hopefulness with the New Year is lower in Mindanao than in Metro Manila, Luzon and Visayas.

Only 85% in Mindanao are hopeful of 2013, compared to 96% in Luzon, 93% in Metro Manila, and 93% in Visayas.

It marked a 9-point drop from 94% in 2011.

"The 85% New Year hope in Mindanao in 2012 is the lowest recorded since the 84% in 2005 who were hopeful of entering 2006," the SWS said.

The polling agency also said hope increased among classes ABC but fell among classes D and E.

"Among classes ABC, New Year hope increased to 100% in 2012 from an already high 97% in both 2010 and 2011," the SWS said.

"Among class D, New Year hope slightly declined to 93% in 2012 from 96% in 2011 and 95% in 2010. Fear of the coming New Year, however, increased to 6% in 2012 from 3% in 2011," it added.

"Among class E, New Year hope declined to 89% in 2012 after recovering to 93% in 2011 from 89% in 2010. Fear of the coming New Year increased to 11% from 6% in 2011," SWS said.
