Woman in MRT suicide attempt to lose leg
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The woman who allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping in front of an incoming Metro Rail Transit (MRT) coach will have her left leg amputated.
MRT general manager Al Vitangcol III identified the woman as 28-year-old Rica Fernandez.
Fernandez allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping in front of the train at the MRT Shaw Boulevard station southbound route past 11 a.m. Thursday.
MRT operations were disrupted for hours after Fernandez's leg was pinned under the train.
A radio dzMM report said rescuers retrieved her from under the train and rushed her to the hospital.
The doctors believe that the victim is suffering from a mental sickness and admitted she wanted to jump and end her life.
The MRT management, however, did not see any reason to sanction the driver since "he exercised due caution" when the incident took place.
They also plan to build platform screen doors to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
MRT operations were immediately restored after the incident. -- report from Jasmin Romero, ABS-CBN News
