In the absence of a law on student fare discounts, a lawmaker has filed a bill that will institutionalize the grant of a fare discount privilege to students on all transport facilities.
Under the proposal by Sen. Edgardo Angara, students are entitled to a 20-percent discount on regular fares on land, sea, and air transport utilities during the entire school year for elementary, high school and college students including those enrolled in vocational and technical schools.
The privilege shall be enjoyed even during weekends, holidays, semestral breaks and Christmas vacations.
Students, however, are required to present their duly issued school identification cards or current validated enrolment forms and other documents to prove their identity before they can avail themselves of the discount privilege.
At present, students are currently enjoying a 20-percent fare discount, applicable only from June to March and from Monday to Friday, by virtue of a memorandum circular issued by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
