MANILA - Some members of the Bukuluran ng Mangagawa sa Pilipinas on Tuesday picketed the south gate of the House of Representatives to protest the increase in sin taxes that took effect this year.

The group claimed that higher sin taxes are just an additional burden on the public. They want the sin tax law repealed.

Sin taxes on tobacco and alcohol products increased January 1 in accordance with the 5-year index and staggered increase of the taxes that began on January 1, 2013.

The increase is being implemented in phases until 2017.

The sin taxes were earmarked for the government's universal healthcare program.

The taxes are also expected to help discourage people from smoking and drinking.
