MANILA -- A former bus driver was caught using drugs inside a bus parked in the Southwest Integrated Provincial Terminal in Coastal Mall, Parañaque City.

The driver was identified as Marlon Mejos, who was caught in the act of sniffing shabu during an inspection on Wednesday morning.

According to the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), they have received reports that some bus drivers are using 'shabu' (crystal methamphetamine) so they decided to launch an inspection.

While they were inspecting the buses, officials noticed that the curtains in one of the buses were closed. Drivers are prohibited from drawing curtains while parked inside the terminal.

When they went onboard the bus, they caught Mejos and his companions doing drugs.

The MMDA recovered six packets of shabu and other drug paraphernalia from Mejos. They also believe that Mejos also supplies drugs to other drivers.

Mejos' companions escaped the scene.

With the help of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), MMDA wants all drivers to undergo a drug test.

According to MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino, drugged drivers have no respect for traffic laws, putting passengers' lives at risk.

Tolentino had earlier asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to implement stricter rules before issuing franchises and licenses to bus lines and drivers who have been involved in the use of illegal drugs.

According to Terminal Manager Rey Araza, the MMDA also subjected drivers to an alcohol test using a breath analyzer. -- with a report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
