MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – A student of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman in Quezon City is in critical condition after she was attacked by 4 suspects inside the school campus Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, identified as 20-year-old Lordei Camille Hina, was alone inside the University Student Council (USC) Office at Vinzons Hall when she was attacked.

Initial investigations by campus police showed that Hina was stabbed in the face with an ice pick and was hit in the head by a hard object.

The suspects also took with them 2 laptop computers, police said.

“[Ang motibo] ay pagnanakaw talaga dahil nag-disguise pa silang maga-apply ng booth sa darating na fair,” said Sgt. Cesar Oliquino of the UP Diliman police.

One of the suspects, identified as 35-year-old Carlo Pecayo, was arrested by authorities as he attempted to escape from the campus via taxi cab.

According to a report by Philippine Collegian, Hina’s bag, two laptops, and an ice pick were recovered from the suspect.

Pecayo, however, denied that he was the one who stabbed the victim.

“Lookout [lang ako] pero nakatulong din ako kahit papano,” he said.

The suspect is now detained at the Quezon City Police District Station 9. He may face charges of robbery and frustrated homicide.

Police are searching for a certain Dante Santos, who is believed to be Pecayo’s accomplice. The other suspects are still unidentified.

UP Fair

A witness told the Philippine Collegian that Pecayo and Santos first introduced themselves as tattoo artists and expressed interest in joining the upcoming UP Fair.

The witness said the 2 suspects left after Hina gave the contact number of USC’s officer-in-charge for UP Fair booths.

However, they returned when Hina was alone inside the office at around 3 p.m.

When the witness returned to the office, she found Hina lying on the floor with her face and upper body covered in blood. The victim was immediately brought to the UP Health Service.

Hina, a fourth-year Political Science student, is currently confined at the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City. -- With a report from Abner Mercado, ABS-CBN News
