BIR plans to tax CNN hero Peñaflorida
MANILA, Philippines - He may have won the CNN Hero of the Year award but Efren Peñaflorida is getting no love from the taxman.
Peñaflorida, a social worker whose "kariton classroom" captured the world's imagination, earlier revealed that he would be paying as much as 30% of his $100,000 cash award from CNN to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
He said 60% of the prize money would go to his company, Dynamic Teen Company, while the remaining 10% would go to his church.
Peñaflorida earlier said he planned to use 90% of the money to expand his school-on-wheels project and build a permanent structure, where he can teach street kids some basic skills.
The BIR's plan to tax Peñaflorida recently caught the ire of senatorial candidate Alexander "Pinoy" Lacson who described it as a "bad joke."
“It’s tantamount to punishing Penaflorida, who has brought prestige and honor to our country. This is something that makes every Filipino sad. Guys like him are our national treasures,” said Lacson.
He added: "Most of those cash awards are one-time awards, which their recipients should enjoy and put to good use. They are not that substantial to adversely affect the country’s fiscal position."
Lacson, author of the book “12 Little Things Every Filipino Can Do to Help Our Country", is running under the Liberal Party banner.

Tax laws
We have our tax laws. If the law says Efren is taxable..so be it. Like Pacquio, his winnings are also taxable. Di ko lang alam kung sinisingil sya ng BIR. But to all these, PGMA has the power to exempt Efren from tax since BIR is an administrative agency and PGMA is the head of all administrative body..she can do so. I would recommend Gloria to exempt Efren from this tax..in turn this will add to her "pogi points".

For sure sa dami ng negative reactions, BIR will not be pushing through with their "plan" of collecting tax from Efren.

This simply shows how "atat" the govt people are in sucking poor filipinos as much money as they can.
What's worse than that is the FACT that these taxes are not put into good use. 98% of our HARD-EARNED taxes only goes to a handful of corrupt, fucking pockets.
