More human skulls, bones unearthed in DOJ compound
Construction workers on Friday found more skulls and skeleton parts inside the Department of Justice compound just two days after unearthing two human skulls and bones at the same site.
Justice officials said five more skulls and human bones were found just six feet underground at the back of the DOJ main building on Padre Faura Street where a new three-story edifice will be built. Construction workers also found pieces of iron and a steel drum, which was initially mistaken for a bomb.
According to Liza de Leon, DOJ Director 3 for Administration, a garrison used by Japanese soldiers once stood at the site where the bones were found. She said the bones might be the remains of Japanese or Filipino soldiers who died during World War II.
Forensix expert Dr. Raquel Fortun said the bones should undergo examination to determine their exact age. "This is a historic site that needs to be studied further," she said, adding that construction should stop until all the bones are exhumed.
