Election period a season of 'lies and liars'
MANILA -- Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim has dismissed rumors that the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) will be closed down.
During the 10th anniversary celebration of the PLM College of Mass Communication on Wednesday, Lim said in his lecture that the university is just being used by rivals as a tool in besmirching his administration in time for the upcoming mid-term elections.
He insisted there is no truth to rumors that the university, headed by Atty. Rafaelito Garayblas, will be shut down.
He told students of PLM that they should distinguish rumors from the truth.
“Who in his right mind will believe this? No right-thinking person will think of closing down a university as prestigious as the PLM or even entertain the idea that such rumors are true,” Lim said.
He also urged residents of Manila not to believe every rumor they hear, saying the election period is a season of "lies and liars."
“Panahon ngayon ng eleksyon kaya panahon din ng paninira at mga tsismis. Maging mapanuri tayo at huwag basta pauuto. 'Yung tsismis na isasara ang PLM, pakalat lang ng mga kalaban ko 'yan sa pulitiko. Ni hindi 'yan napag-uusapan o iniisip. Ano ang rason para isara?”
“Naiintindihan ko na may iilan diyan na mga political leanings or ulterior motive pero sana naman, huwag nang idamay ang PLM sa pagpapakalat ng walang katotohanan para lang ako siraan,” he added.
Lim's running mate Lou Veloso, who is currently a councilor for Manila's 6th district, said students should just focus on their studies instead of engaging themselves in baseless reports.
He also said Manila residents and students are fortunate to have a mayor who values education and makes it accessible to the poor by providing tuition-free education.
During the lecture, Lim pointed out that he even established the City College of Manila (CCM) to complement the PLM.
The PLM mainly caters to students who graduated with high honors in high school while the CCM accommodates average students. Both schools offer tuition-free education.
Lim also said PLM has reached great heights in terms of academic excellence, ranking 4th among the top 20 Colleges of Medicine nationwide under the administration of Garayblas.
