MANILA, Philippines - A gun seized from the recovered vehicle of car dealer Venson Evangelista in Mandaluyong City was owned by suspected carjack ring leader Raymond Dominguez, police said on Friday.

Metro Manila police director Nicanor Bartolome told ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG) that based on records from the Philippine National Police-Firearms and Explosives Division (PNP-FED), the gun is registered to Benigno Victorino.

Bartolome said that after further investigations by the PNP-FED, it turned out that the gun was transferred by Dominguez to Victorino.

He said investigators were checking if the gun was used in the killing of Evangelista.

The firearm was seized from an ash-gray Toyota Land Cruiser found by police at the parking area of the Market Place Mall in Mandaluyong City on Thursday.

A check on the car's chassis number confirmed that it was the missing vehicle of Evangelista.

The Toyota Land Cruiser's original license plate number is NAI 316. A different license plate (LGF 392) was attached to the vehicle when it was discovered by policemen.

The vehicle's recovery came hours after the arrest of another Dominguez, Roger, after he was caught for a traffic violation in Quezon City.

Bartolome said that before Roger was arrested, members of the Quezon City police's district anti-carnapping unit were tailing the vehicle.

He said Roger could have sensed that he was being followed by the operatives. He said Roger took the wheels from his driver and tried to speed off, leading to the traffic violation.

Bartolome said he hopes the Dominguez brothers' detention would result to lower incidents of carjacking in Metro Manila.

Roger was brought to the Quezon City police headquarters in Camp Karingal while Raymond is currently detained at the Malolos police station in Bulacan province, where he earlier voluntarily surrendered.

Bartolome said that majority of the carjacking incidents in Metro Manila are perpetrated by the brothers' group.

"Itong pagkakahuli ni Roger, dalawa na sila sa custody natin ngayon, malaking bagay ito sa kampanya natin sa carnapping kasi karamihan ng mga insidente ay sila ang nai-implicate dito," the police official said.
