Bus driver faces raps over field trip death
MANILA, Philippines – Charges of negligence resulting to homicide, serious physical injuries and damage to property have been filed against Carlos Villanueva, the driver of the Advocate Transport Service tour bus that killed high school student Cacai Ramirez on February 8.
Another student, Pamela Enriquez, was hurt in the incident.
Ramirez and Enriquez were among a group of students from Holy Spirit Academy in Malolos, Bulacan who had gone to Tanay, Rizal for a field trip to Camp Capinpin when they were hit by the rolling bus, which was left parked with its engine running.
According to PO2 Jerome Gueta of Tanay Police, the bus driver is presently detained at the Tanay Police Dtation and will be released as soon as he posts bail.
Meanwhile, family and friends continue to make their way to the Ramirez home in Bulacan to pay their last respects to the victim.
According to the victim’s father, Ray, his daughter’s remains will be buried tomorrow.
But before the burial, the victim’s remains will be brought to the Holy Spirit Academy of Malolos to give her schoolmates a chance to pay their last respects.
Enriquez remains confined at the intensive care unit of Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City.
According to an ABS-CBN source, Enriquez’s surgery was postponed on Tuesday due to the decrease in her oxygen level and the fluctuation of her blood pressure.
She is currently conscious but on life support in order to stabilize her oxygen level.
Enriquez was hit on the left side of her lower extremity.
Surgery from her waist and hip to the ankle will proceed as soon as her vital signs stabilize.
The company the school hired for the field trip, World of Outbound, said in a text message that it is supporting the investigation and is willing to provide assistance to the victims’ families.
“The company is extending its full support and cooperation to the ongoing investigation to determine the proximate cause of the accident and at the same time coordinating with advocate transport to provide any and all assistance to the family of the victims. Further, the company in cooperation with Holy Spirit, has provided critical stress debriefing for the students who witnessed the unfortunate incident,” the company said.
