Two bomb-sniffing dogs from Makati City failed several evaluations done by the National Capital Region Police Office including tests to sniff out explosive material such as Trinitrotoluene (TNT).

Deputy Director Leopoldo Bataoil, NCRPO chief, said police tested a total of eight K-9 units that are regularly used to guard several establishments in the Makati financial district.

Bataoil said the dogs had to undergo six tests including sniffing out C-4, TNT, ammonium nitrate, detonating cord and other explosive materials.

He said almost all the dogs were able to smell C-4 while some of the dogs failed to detect TNT. He said none of the dogs got a perfect score in the tests.

Bataoil said some of the dogs will need to undergo retraining to better equip them to sniff out explosives. "There is no space for K-9 units that are only there for display. The financial district should be closely guarded and these dogs are part of our first line of defense against possible bombings," he said.

He said another eight dogs will undergo tests on Saturday.
